Digital Art - Tablets?

I'm admiring a lot of people on my watch list who are digital artists... I'm intrigued and would love to try something myself (but I don't think I'd do any good!).

What sort of tablet would be good to start out with? Are they majorly expensive? I've seen a few on Ebay but i have no idea where to start.
